More on PISA Scores - It's All About Poverty

“Duncan needs to deliver the message that all our students deserve not only access to an education, but access to an excellent education. He needs to repeatedly remind us that, when it comes to school improvement, it’s poverty not stupid.”

Good article that has information that shows the relationship between poverty and poor test scores. The table showing how the USA ranks on the tests when poverty is accounted for is eye-opening. Educators should look at this and arm themselves with this information so they can argue effectively with those who blame teachers for the supposed breakdown of education in America.

Another Shot At NCLB

Newsweek has decried the loss of creativity in today’s youth. Now, Peter Pappas, in his excellent blog, “Copy Paste,” also laments the seeming death of student creativity, and he lays the blame squarely on No Child Left Behind. The reliance on high-stakes testing has reduced many educators to shrinking the curriculum to little more than those subjects that will be tested by the state and reported to the media. Drill and kill, as many educators refer to what they are forced to do with students, leaves little room for creativity, let alone the arts, music, and in some cases, social studies.

Little wonder veteran teachers are furious with our government’s interference in the educational process. Don’t get me started…
